Marketing EMails are not forever
 2026-01-09

'tis been a catch up time for me. On soooo many levels. Don't get me wrong though; not all of it's "work". I'm behind on my gaming too; I was out of the country during the Death Stranding 2 release so that's a high priority too! (Should finish the main story this weekend.) But one of the many things I'm behind on is my "marketing" mail. I tend to send it all to a dedicated box so it doesn't clutter my more important messages, and I tend to give it a quick look, but often miss things if I get (...)

Change is good but too much change can mess up your backup
 2026-01-02

I've got this complicated backup routine with my photos that gives me confidence that I have 2-4 copies of each photo. There's the one on the camera (at first), the primary one on the server that files are copied to but never overwritten. Then there is an auto copy to another drive of the entire folder, which does overwrite. Then there is a manual move (not a copy) to a third drive than contains a tiered copy to a block segmented folder which is then diffed with  (...)

Recycled PS5 is alive
 2025-12-26

...so the BC-250 worked out fine. Funny stuff really. I bought it as I wanted a PS5 chip for geek value, but since I was overseas at the time I didn't do anything with it, came back and loads of smart people did all the hard work for me. It's now pretty much a case of "install Bazzite and use Steam"... all you need to work out youself is how you're going to power and cool it. Which is where I'm at. If you can find one cheap and have spare power supplies and or a case I suggest getting one (...)

The science of shopping research
 2025-12-19

Was doing some shopping research… it is that time of year afterall… and I was looking into a subject I know little about. E-ink writing tablets. I find these pretty cool, but really I don’t like writing so it’s no really for me. As a result I’m not really up to date with what’s a good buy. I knew of the well promoted ones and that seemed the best option, and I know of the companies that I’d assume would make one, but that’s about it. (Not going to name too many names here (...)

A word today is not the same word tomorrow
 2025-12-12

I was reading a post about Metal Gear Solid 4 (the exact topic not relevant to conversation, but in short it was about the difficulty of porting it) and Metal Gear Solid 5 was mentioned in the comments as a Sequel, to which some people went off that it's not a Sequel, it's a prequel. Sigh. Language creep.

Prequel is a "modern" (around late 50s supposedly) word that means "pre-sequel" and is a sub-set of sequel. Sequel simply means something that (...)

Pass the parts
 2025-12-05

So how's New Nas November going? Well it's December now, but yeah, it all went well. Still ongoing kinda though, so the final assessment of the Jonsbo N5 will have to wait a bit. Why is this? Well this whole server plan got complicated fast. As I said earlier, the new server become a priority as the server got old and died, forcing me to replace it with an even older machine. This created problem A; I didn't really want to go for a traditional NAS server (...)

Final Fantasy of Fitness
 2025-11-28

When I decided that I needed to do more than just weight training to keep myself at my ideal weight luck was on my side. Final Fantasy XIII just came out. The relevance? It was something to do while I was on an exercise bike. For better or worse the combat system was very playable with minimal button presses. It was more strategic and timing based. Thus I cut back on some food, kept doing weights, and I played Final Fantasy XIII for hours. Was it the most efficient way to burn (...)

The power of difference
 2025-11-21

I'm a lover of good audio but I don't consider myself an "audiophile". Why? Well I don't agree with a lot of the common beliefs that go with that label. For example I think DACs are important, but I don't think that the average person can hear the difference between an amplifier with a toridial power supply, and I certainly thing that polarised HDMI cables are sheer crazy town.... The problem is a lot of these claims are very subjective, and really can't be proven. However recently I did (...)

Five Months of Windows
 2025-11-14

I was out of the country and as a result my Windows 10 based server was on without a reboot for months. 5 months. I was rather stressed about it as I've never tested Windows 10 that long, but it did make it. During this time it was running as the house server and running some file management programs written by Sinner Computing and yeah... I got back and it was all running fine. Explorer had crashed and but it was all fine.

(Why no auto-reboots? 'cos I've blocked them. Why? My (...)

Questionable interface logic
 2025-11-07

I've been using ON1 for a few years for processing RAW files. Do I like it? Is this a review? Hmmm.... maybe I'll do this in time. I have sent EMails to them in the past, and they were ignored. For now I'll just say I use it as it's OK, I'm kinda used to it, and it allows you to buy it rather than renting. But moving on....

A recent issue that really bugged me is how it handles the loading of pre-edited photos. I ran into this issue when I loaded the program up to do some editing and (...)
