Dave Plummer had a cool video with associated source last week highlighting some of the how's and why's of Windows ASM software. It's an interesting summary of the power of Windows software... and at the same time why it's a bit pointless doing ASM; you're at the mercy of the Win32 libraries so if they are not running as efficient as your own code you are no longer the weakest link. His editor goes too far IMHO in the name of proving a point; it's got no icon and it's optimised for ultra small even if this requires a slower start. But it's a good lesson for many I hope!

My  SmEdit is written in much the same way, but didn't go for hyper small. Mine started out being around 20KB (much like the MASM editor) but over it got to around 100KB. I did for a time make some usability changes in the name of making it smaller, for example making the settings a separate program, but I eventually decided I was just being silly and accepted the code "bloat".

...to be honest while I like the fact that people are thinking and liking tiny software, as someone who has sold such software for 20 years it does make me a bit jealous.

Ah well.
