All Sidewalks Lead to Roads
I'm over in the USA right now, and it never ceases to amaze me how much walking is seen as a non-option. Paths are often just not there, or end in carparks, or just... end. Google Maps is somewhat aware of it so when you ask to go somewhere by walking it generally takes a crazy amount more distance. Sometimes it's been right and my ignoring the advice forced me to walk all the way back to avoid probably being arrested crossing a major freeway going over a river, but generally it's possible (...)
Not stealing this bike
Excluding the one I have safely in my garage back home, every one of my old bikes has been stolen. (Even one that I gave away to someone else...) One while I was at a movie, one that was locked in my shed, three that were in my backyard and not locked (long suspicious story there)... but at last I've managed to keep one long enough to sell. My secret? I only had it for three months. I'm leaving where I am for another place prior to going back home, and there's no way to (...)
Months of Photo Indecision
I tend to post photos in grouped blocks as it has many advantages. It aids finding photos, makes it harder to keep posting the same subject and obviously it seems more organised. But sometimes you end up with left overs that don't fit in and as a result have a loose group associated to them instead. This happened recently and I ended up with photos from July to September.... and as it happens over that time I was changing the way I process photos. In reality I'm not 100% (...)
New NAS November
Before my storage needs exploded I used to have a server that was based on an old computer with a hard drive or two. But due to a combination of increasing photo/video file sizes and slower hard drive density the one or two drives soon became three or four, and the cases I used became a limitation. Thus in 2011 when my then server died without warning I bought my first computer intended for that purpose from the start.
Money was a bit tight at time so I got a machine (...)
Science of maintaining a healthy weight
What? Yeah. I can do any topic I want here.
Right now I'm away from home, mostly by myself, 'cos of work. For about 5 months. It's a while yeah, but I've been trying to take advantage of it all, and one of my major goals has been to learn more about what weight management techniques work for me ...and probably to a lesser extent you! Normally some aspects, such as meal replacement/modification/skipping, are a bit anti social as it would mean never eating with my family. But as I said (...)
An exercise in time management and priorities
Back in June I got back to this internet thing. I never really left, I just stopped making visible changes. So I stopped stopping. I had plans to get back to a rapid Beta release cycle so I could then finish this whole 1.9 thing started many moons ago. But due to many reasons, mostly website updates, photos and exercise, that has not happened. In reality, it's not going to happen now for several months as (...)
Not sure how I missed a whole protocol
iTimeSync has been a popular program all things considered, and unlike other popular programs it's one that has been used by me. It's been so long since I wrote it (2002) I can't even exactly remember why I even did. There's no useful comment in the ReadMe... and my motivations 20 years ago are a mystery in itself. Most likely I simply wanted a way to sync all my computers time and figured I might as well write it myself. It (...)
Sometimes you just need to LEGO of your account
Darn. Not how I feel but this is a public G rated blog.
Just discovered I've lost an important account on the interwebs. Had it for 15+ years. Hard to be sure exactly how long as I've lost the account. LEGO related, but I'm not trying publicly cause trouble so I'm not naming here, and it should be obvious in any case. Used for buying and selling, had a store where you listed all your wares and the price you expected, and it had a feedback number... so it's loss is really annoying. Can (...)
Point five
Was talking to someone about a movie and was confused to hear "too many point five shots". I asked and they described what they meant and I said "like a fish eye" and soon after I understood. 'cos of the "0.5" button on phones. Ahhhhh.....
Looking into this the term has been around for at least two years. Sigh.
5000 photos might be too much
My other major obsession is photography. It's why this site is a photo site with news and text features. But anyway I've fallen behind in some site stuff as I went to a Roller Derby and took 5000 photos. Which takes a long time to go through. I learnt a lot due to this so there's no real regrets, but yeah. One of the prices of using features like pre capture. But that's done and I'll be back on the case.
